Frequently Asked Questions:

Owning a Maine Coon can be a very different experience to a common domestic cat. Here we hope to help answer some of the questions you may have about this lifelong task as Maine Coons can live for up to 15 years.

How big can they grow to?

Maine Coons are one of the largest breed of domestic cats and can grow up to 9 kg and 25 - 40cm tall - males are usually slightly larger than females.

As such a large breed, they continue to grow up to 3 -5 years of age and require high quality food throughout this period.

Are they outdoor or indoor cats?

While Maine Coons are perfectly able to live either outdoors or indoors, they are very valuable and strong cats who can wander far and scale high fences and trees.

For thses reasons most owners will keep them indoors, build a catio attached to the house or 'catproof' their garden using services such as Protectapet.

They can also be taken out with harnesses if trained from a young age.

Personality

These beautiful cats are naturally inquisitive and playful. They are often known as gentle giants and are considered a good choice for familes as they are very unlikely to attack - just beware of sharp claws when playing.

They are also very sociable and intelligent and can be easily trained. However, they are very playful and strong needing plenty of attention and interactive play.

As they are so big, you should be careful around breakable or valuable objects!

Do you need to groom them?

Maine Coons have a thick luxurious coat that requires daily attention even if it is just for a few minutes - most of them love to be groomed and can come to demand it! During summer months, you may notice considerably more shedding and they may loose some of their classic manes for a few months. It is especially important to groom at this time to avoid issues with hairballs

While they are clean, as cats usually are, they can develop matts in their coat so a bath once a month is recommended.

Their claws can become long and sharp, even with plenty of scratching posts and it is recommended you regularly clip their nails - this can often be included as part of vet pet plans e.g. Vets 4 Pets

Do they get on with other animals?

These majestic creatures are very tolerant of other pets in the home, as long as they are introduced carefully and slowly.

Our cats happily share the garden with nine rabbits and their large size makes them more confident and calm.

Male cats are more easygoing, whereas female cats are more entertaining!

What do Maine Coons eat?

As a very large cat they need to have a plentiful supply of high protein, quality food. Many owners choose to give them a combination of wet and dry food with dry food available throughout the day while they are still growing (1-5 years) and wet food or freshly cooked meat.

You shouls aim to ensure they have a daily protein intake of 35-50% so look carefully at the contents in food you buy.
